Wisconsin Badgers football senior advisor and former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio will resign following an arrest early Friday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, head coach Luke Fickell announced in a press conference on Monday.
“He’s going to move forward, and he’s going to resign and move on,” Fickell said. “But it’s a tough situation, decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do and we’ll continue to move forward.”
Del Rio, 61, admitted to operating a vehicle that hit a street sign and broke a fence before coming to a rest in a yard, according to an incident report from the MPD. Police arrived at the scene at around 12:35 a.m. and witnesses directed them to Del Rio, who was walking away from the area. No injuries were reported.
Del Rio joined the Badgers as the senior advisor to Fickell before the start of the 2024 college football season, after being fired from his role as defensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders in late November 2023. Del Rio helped Wisconsin develop both its defensive and offensive game alongside assisting the head coach.
“We’ll move forward from that, and now we can focus ourselves on the things that are really at hand here, with the No. 1 team in the country coming in with an incredible opportunity in front of us,” Fickell said.
