Women’s basketball defeats Georgetown thanks to second-half performance

Women’s basketball pulled together a dominant second half to win over Georgetown on Sunday.

The Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 79-61 on Sunday. This was not an easy win to pull off, but a dominant second half for the Badgers helped them get there.

Junior guard Ronnie Porter had herself a game, scoring a career-high of 26 points. Porter also had not one but two buzzer-beaters and grabbed five rebounds. Serah Williams helped her out with 17 points and 16 rebounds alongside Carter McCray with 11 points and 11 rebounds. This was the first time since 2019 that a pair of Badgers have scored double-doubles in the same game.

The first half of the game was neck-and-neck as the Badgers and the Hoyas went back and forth. At the half, the Badgers trailed 33-32

It wasn’t until around midway through the third quarter  the Badgers decided to turn the game around. Wisconsin went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter, one of those buckets being Porter's second buzzer-beater of the night.

Porter dominated in the opening of the first fourth quarter, coming out strong with eight straight points to put the Badgers up 64-56 with five minutes left in the game. Graduate student Tess Myers finished this one off, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to contribute to the team’s 10-2 run.

Head coach Marisa Moseley pointed out her team’s ability to contribute in any offensive aspect of the game helped them pull out their win on Sunday night.

“We have more perimeter scoring, we have another dominant post, they’ve got to pick their poison,” Moseley said

The Badgers are off to play their next game on the road against South Dakota State Wednesday at 7 p.m.
