The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department (UWPD) received five reports of stolen electric bicycles and scooters over the past 10 days, according to a UWPD incident report and crime warning email sent to UW-Madison students and faculty Thursday.
The locations of the thefts were Memorial Union, Waters Residence Hall, Witte Hall, Lowell Center and Helen C White Lot 6.
Bike and scooter theft have been a long-standing problem on campus.
UWPD encouraged students to park bikes and scooters in visible, well-lit and secure areas and advised them to purchase anti-theft devices, such as trackers, or locks in order to further reduce theft.
“We don't recommend folks try to apprehend a stolen item on their own, however,” Marc Lovicott, executive director of communications for UWPD, told The Daily Cardinal. “[Thefts] should be reported to us, and then we can work with the tracking device to help make a recovery.”
UWPD is actively investigating these thefts and urged anyone with information to contact UWPD at (608) 264-2677.
