Five people, including two University of Wisconsin-Madison students, were displaced in an apartment fire in downtown Madison Monday afternoon, according to the Madison Fire Department (MFD).
MFD responded to reports of an apartment fire at 4:22 p.m. Monday after multiple 911 callers reported seeing flames coming from the top story of an apartment building at the 900 block of East Gorham Street.
Fire units were dispatched to the structure fire where Madison Police Department (MPD) crews initially found fire in the rear side of the structure with flames climbing from the second floor to the third floor. There was a fire attack on the second and third floor with crews trying to contain the fire. MPD was able to put out the fire completely at 5:03 p.m. on Monday night.
All five residents of the apartment were displaced. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the five displaced residents, and UW-Madison is assisting with the displaced students, The Office of Student Assistance and Support said in an email to The Daily Cardinal.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
