We’ve seen black-and-white features make a comeback over the past few years as directors strive to make their films seem more artistic and visionary. While there’s no denying that Sam Levinson’s “Malcolm & Marie” looks good on screen, the director seems to think that the eye-catching imagery and his actors’ performances are enough to sway us.

Identifying which medium best suits a story can be a difficult task for filmmakers. Playwright August Wilson clearly knew how to tell “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom,” for every minute of this story feels meant for the stage.

2019’s high-energy HBO series “Euphoria” took viewers into the dark world of modern teenage life, highlighting the troubling isolation that comes with dark sexual and drug experiences. It’s rare to see a film that feels like it’s divided into two separate films based on the different time periods it depicts. Such is the case with Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on the 2016 memoir by J.D. Vance that describes his troubling upbringing in Ohio involving his mother’s heroin addiction.

We’re on lucky number seven here at “Are You Entertained,” and sadly it couldn’t seem to come at an unluckier time. The world looks damn bleak right now, and as I listen to my family member cough up a COVID-filled lung downstairs and approach my fifth straight week of self-imposed social isolation measures, I know myself — and I’m sure many other Badgers out there — could use a few gentle reminders on what the word “gratitude” looks like during this time of the year.

Few in show business are as daring as Sacha Baron Cohen. For years the Jewish comedian has gone out of his way to make us cringe and laugh with his mockumentary style of film in which he portrays fictional characters yet interacts in the real world with oblivious individuals, often getting himself in deep danger and trouble.

We’ve grown so used to being completely dominated by technology that we haven’t even realized it. Many of us — including myself — are able to admit that we use our phones far too often and have grown completely dependent on them for communication, entertainment or “connection” with others. But, as a society we have accepted digital communication as a driving force, one that has already led to psychological and societal breakdowns before our very eyes.

Many people have asked me if I have any movie recommendations to lift their souls during the perilous, dark times we’re living in with the COVID-19 pandemic still controlling the world. While there are numerous feel-good films perfect for our time, Netflix’s latest drama won’t serve as a mood-elevator.

With Covid-19 closing movie theaters around the world, many of us are relying on streaming services for new entertainment. Netflix has released several films over the course of the pandemic, its latest the hit action thriller “The Old Guard.” Reaching millions of new homes and proving to be a major hit for Netflix, such success cannot save this film from its overwhelming stupidity.

Lately we’ve seen the release of several films that explore the issue of wealth inequality and class difference, South Korea’s “Parasite” and “Burning” especially coming to mind. While a fascinating narrative to pursue, it seems as if too many films are reusing the same themes and believing that as long as a social theme is centered around the story, that it makes it profound.
