Although their press photos rub shoulders with the likes of
Paramore and 30 Seconds to Mars, Johnny Foreigner spend their time
touring with groups like Girls and Los Campesinos! on the regular.
The hyperactive pop-rock on their latest release, Grace and the
Bigger Picture, straddles the fence between the two groups
like Harry Harlow's monkeys, unsure about whether the substance
provided by one can negate the comfort provided by the other.

Thanks to a combination of overblown, upbeat vocal melodies,
rhythms that make you want to get up and dance and the courage to
do whatever seems fun, the Apples in Stereo have become one of the
most well-known and influential indie-pop bands in existence. With
17 years and six full studio albums, the band, in collaboration
with Yep Roc records, has seen fit to release an album of their
greatest hits, aptly named #1 Hits Explosion.

Some poet probably once said ""to every season, a song,"" and
right now you can almost hear Vitamin C's ""Graduation"" fading
into the soundtrack of our lives. It's hard to savor schooling when
you're in the thick of finals preparation, all aflutter
""finishing"" term papers and tracking down lecture notes from
lame-os, but for those who will have filled out their last blue
book by the 15th, there's a feeling that we should somehow stop and
bask in the moment. A lot of stuff has gone down around here in
four years, and so to recount it all I wrote a song of my own, to
the tune of Billy Joel's ""We Didn't Start the Fire"":

Cutie ""Opens' new ""Door': Death Cab for Cutie's latest EP is a
spunky alternative to last year's melancholy and masochistic Narrow
Stairs. Despite this, the group still maintains their lasting image
as indie's lovelorn pop-rockers.
(04/16/09 6:00am)
Released nearly a year after their critically acclaimed Narrow
Stairs and made up of songs recorded during the same sessions,
Death Cab for Cutie's newest EP, The Open Door, certainly
differentiates itself from their last release. It's easy to see why
the band didn't include these five far more upbeat songs on the
depressing Narrow Stairs. For one thing, these songs wouldn't have
fit the darker mood of the album. For another, it satisfies the
unending, if somewhat masochistic, craving Death Cab for Cutie fans
have for the melancholy and melodic styling of Ben Gibbard.

Lemonwilde rocks ""room': Lemonwilde's debut EP Red Room shows
that the group has lots of potential, earning comparisons to
Radiohead's album OK Computer.
(04/14/09 6:00am)
Lemonwilde released their debut EP Red Room from Los Angeles,
but the band is rooted right here in singer Joe Murray's hometown
of Madison. As their debut spreads through the Internet's wide
world of music, listeners will find something eerily reminiscent of
Radiohead but with a twist of hard rock. The result is something
hard to listen to if you're leisurely walking down the street, yet
gripping enough to force its way onto your playlist with
regularity.

It's scientifically impossible to break an egg by squeezing it
in one hand. Yet, there it is on the cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs'
new album It's Blitz!: Karen O's hand reaches in from the right and
smashes that thing up, exhibiting a symbol of intimidating power
and strength that YYY's have done their best to embody in their
seven years on the scene. Both the assertive title and the cover
art are a little misleading, though. It's Blitz! marks a distinct
shift in sound from one of indie rock's most heralded
groups.

Beirut's March of the Zapotec and Realpeople Holland EP
is a prime example of music best conveyed through vinyl. Their
Eastern European-influenced brass orchestration sounds like it
should be coming from a phonograph playing to each layer's rustic
overtone; but more sharply, Zapotec/Holland is made for
vinyl because of its stark dichotomy profiling two different
cultures of people and music.

Nowadays the term buzz band"" has become something of a taboo. A
well-received EP can carry a band farther than ever due to the
heightened accessibility of the Internet, but too frequently it
also spells an LP of unrealized hype for many bands coming up in
this fashion. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's 2007 self-titled
EP didn't exactly burn up the charts, but it certainly grabbed the
attention of those who heard it. Instead of taking this praise as
an opportunity to rush out an LP of underdeveloped, overproduced
songs, POBPAH took their time and crafted a masterpiece of early
'90s indie pop in their eponymous debut LP.

Bon Iver: Bon Iver took the music world by storm last year
receiving wide acclaim for their debut For Emma, Forever Ago, now
frontman Justin Vernon is adding texture to his sound on Bon Iver's
latest release.

Eau Claire, Wis., native band, Bon Iver, is back with its new
EP, Blood Bank. Coming off the success of its phenomenal
first album, For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver returns with
the folksy sounds that made its last album so successful: soulful
vocals, intricate melodies and stirring lyrics.

It has been over a decade since Converge and Pig Destroyer
established themselves as the kings of hardcore/metal music.
Although their music has suffered none from age and it's highly
unlikely either will be dethroned anytime soon, fans of aggressive
music had been patiently waiting for the new wave of sounds to
emerge.

After a major fire destroyed the Sigma Phi Epsilon house in May,
the fraternity will begin the fall semester with only charred
remains of a home at 237 Langdon Street, but efforts to rebuild the
structure are already underway.
