Leaving your mark on the world is more than a moment; it’s about a lifetime experience. Autograf, a trio comprised of Mikul Wing, Louis Kha and Jake Carpenter, has brought back the process of art, with the music to match.

When the Badgers’ injury report came out last week before their matchup with Michigan State, it came as a surprise that kicker Rafael Gaglianone would be sitting out. At first glance, it was a huge loss for UW, as Gaglianone has a major impact on the team’s scoring and has plenty of range in his right foot.

Just shy of 200 Madisonians huddled into the The Frequency Sunday night to soak up the singer-songwriter stylings of Margaret Glaspy, accompanied by the Midwest trio Bad Bad Hats.

I’ll be up-front: A former editor of mine recently nicknamed me “one-trick pony” for my repeated coverage of the indie rock band Hippo Campus. He had a point: Thursday marked the group’s third concert in Madison since September, when they performed as an opener for Benjamin Booker. Less than two months later Hippo Campus returned, headlining with songs off their latest EP South. By Thursday’s show at the Majestic Theatre, this one-trick pony was worried the Minnesota-based band wouldn’t be able to engage the audience without the nauseating feeling of deja-vu. However, Hippo Campus managed to electrify the crowd, with help from two opening acts.

Both of the headlining acts of Revelry made the most out of a rough situation. The afternoon rain had given Madison a cold, damp grey hangover from the early-morning Mifflin festivities, and the Orpheum was the least habit- able place for those seeking refuge. Not only was the sound quality questionable close to the stage, which was the only section of the theater where anyone stood, but security made a point of asserting themselves into crowd’s festivities that would have otherwise gone ignored for a bigger show. But that deterred neither the performers nor the crowd.

There’s nothing quite like the smeary ink stamps and thick Sharpie Xs haphazardly tattooed onto the hands of myself and fellow under-21 concertgoers. With an occasional warning from a bouncer telling me not to wash my hands until the ink dries, I’m pretty used to the fine art tradition of hand stamping. Thankfully, I wasn’t the only one showing off some fresh ink Thursday night at High Noon Saloon, where the Minnesotan band Bad Bad Hats opened for Seattle natives Hey Marseilles.

The Majestic was set for a night of folk music and copious amounts of dancing Tuesday night. The Mascot Theory, Chef’Special and Frank Turner put on an absolutely amazing performance. To be perfectly honest it was not what I expected, but was one hell of a good time. As a frequent concertgoer, I’ve never had so much fun at a show before. This show probably had the most age-diverse audience I’ve ever seen. There were kids as young as 12 or 13 there as well as some 20-somethings along with a good handful of people over the age of 40. I know for a fact every single person there had the best time imaginable.

I am a huge rock ’n’ roll fan, always have been and always will be. It is the music that I grew up on and that I primarily listen to now. And because I am such a fan of the genre, I am usually up to listen to most songs that fall within the genre, but not every artist satisfies my musical taste. Such an example would be Parquet Courts’ new EP “Monastic Living.” I enjoy almost all types of music, since I believe that it is such an important expression in our culture; I did not enjoy “Monastic Living” to say the least.

Many know Kid Cudi for his solo rap career. But some are unaware of the other talents that he’s recently exploring. Cudi has been busier than ever since his last trip to Madison in 2013. When he first came to perform, there was a lot of hype coming from his breakout on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. Cudi had released Man On The Moon: The End of Day under this label, and went on to release Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager under Kanye’s label as well. Both albums had received the nation’s eyes and boosted his following dramatically. Though the breakout actually came after the release of his third studio album Indicud, this is where he began to transcend and thrive more on his own in a creative way. He looked for more than that of following just what pop culture wanted. So when he arrived in Madison at the Alliant Energy Center on Sept. 9, 2013 it was a big moment. The concert featured an up-and-coming rapper known as Logic, and the well-known rap collective Odd Future.

For all the sad souls that were stuck in the library this Sunday, I express my sincere apologies. With the streets as dead as ever, The Chainsmokersshow was invigorating at Liquid nightclub and made for the perfect Sunday funday. Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are the members of this electronic duo based out of New York. Many see their mainstream releases, such as the single “#Selfie,” as being for the “basic” listeners in the audience. However, The Chainsmokersare setting trends and making simple ideas into wonderful mixes. The entire lineup for the night was stacked with impressive talent, so I made sure to arrive early to see the entire event.

I’ve had the opportunity to see a wide and strange collection of items thrown onto stages during concerts throughout the years: bras, underwear and phone numbers scribbled on Post-it notes. But Thursday night’s Hippo Campus show at the Majestic Theatre added a new one to my record book: Halloween candy.

Friday, Nov. 6, the Orpheum Theater hosted the most visually and audibly charming performance I’ve ever seen. Wildling opened for Young the Giant and one word to describe the entire night was blissful. If you’re into newer bands, Wildling exudes an adventurous vibe, making me want to trek across the country with the band providing the soundtrack for my travels. This up-and-coming band writes very personal lyrics with noticeable heart behind every word. I am excited to hear what they’ll release on their upcoming crowd-funded EP later this year.

Freakfest is one of the most anticipated and well-known weekends in Madison. With my freshman experience behind me, I was ready for round two. MisterWives and Timeflies were performing at this year’s Capitol stage, two artists who are experts when it comes to partying and hosting an insane concert in Madtown. Last October, Timeflies rocked out at the Orpheum Theater. This Halloween weekend was MisterWives’ third time in Madison this year, after playing at the High Noon Saloon in March and then at the Majestic in September. They just can’t get enough of this city—and I can’t complain.

Before I dive into a detailed breakdown of this weekend’s events at The Orpheum Theater, I’ll keep it short and offer this generalization: Man, oh man, the last few days were a great time to be a fan of dance music in Madison. The city’s jam junkies turned out Friday to see their revered heroes in Sound Tribe Sector 9 melt some faces and Saturday, it seemed, everyone in Madison came out for what has become something of a tradition in our city: Cherub’s yearly visit.

To some, music is a mission, with each chord dripping in politics and each bar directed at some critic’s praise or curse. I’ve been one of those critics for a few years now, an accessory to those ideas that music needs some kind of inherent politics or grand, meta concept. It’s a conversation worth having, but it betrays what made so many of us fall in love with music in the first place: the excitement of a stomping beat, clapping your hands and the smile of a warm melody.

He’s already released two studio albums and 10 mixtapes. Now, in promotion of his recently released third album GO:OD AM, Mac Miller gears his national tour towards the Badger State. Over the next two weeks, his tour schedule is packed tight with 10 concerts across the country, and Wisconsin is seventh on the list. The Philly born and raised rapper will blast the Madison audience with sound from his new album Saturday in the Orpheum Theatre

Many times collaborations between great artists don’t work. This isn’t because of a lack of musical ability or poor production, but instead the artists are focused on their style or outperforming the other and not about the mix as a whole. Other times, artists work so impeccably well together that you almost forget it’s a collaboration and look forward to the new group’s next project. Big Grams, the hip-hop project from Big Boi and Phantogram, falls into the latter category with their debut, self-titled EP.
