We all have that one relative: the scruffy-looking type who keeps to themselves at family gatherings and clearly doesn’t want to be there. His hair wild, eyes lowered, Destroyer’s frontman Dan Bejar appeared to headline the second night of the annual FRZN Fest embodying this character. He took frequent sips of his beer as he crooned lyrics that sounded like poetry but felt like the deep prophecies an uncle absentmindedly drones on about at the dinner table.

On Jan. 28, the Grammy Awards will celebrate its 60th annual presentation of what they call “Music’s Biggest Night.” This year’s batch of nominees saw a surprising and welcome surge in hip-hop and R&B artists in major categories, but only time will tell which musicians will walk away with awards. Jay-Z leads the pack with eight nominations, followed by Kendrick Lamar’s seven nods, then Bruno Mars’ six. All three are also up for the coveted Album of the Year award. Competition is tight across multiple awards and the Grammys are no stranger to polarizing wins, as both critical darlings and chart-toppers are pitted against one another. Just last year, Adele’s 25 won Album of the Year but she said, “I can’t possibly accept this award...my artist of my life is Beyoncé,” referring to her fellow nominee’s “monumental, soul-baring, and beautiful” Lemonade. In past years, I begrudgingly watched the ceremony, and thought that the Grammys was the music industry’s biggest night rather than music as a whole, but I have never been more surprised and impressed by the nominees, which only makes picking winners that much harder.

There’s no one who loves a good murder mystery more than I do. Okay, there probably is, but I’d just like to say that I really love murder mysteries. So obviously, “The End of the F***ing World” was recommended to me by everyone I knew — even my favorite true crime podcasts were talking about it. I took the bait and watched the trailer, but had many hesitations before diving into a full-on binge session. However, as soon as I watched the first episode, I was hooked and proceeded to watch the entire season in one sitting.

Dec. 15 marked several major releases as finals week started in Madison. Eminem and N.E.R.D. released their first albums in four and seven years, respectively, and BROCKHAMPTON closed their SATURATION trilogy with SATURATION III, their third album in six months. Then, as finals wrapped up on Dec. 21, we were greeted by Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, the highly-anticipated collaborative effort from Travis Scott and Quavo under the moniker Huncho Jack. This outpour of music was a fun way to close out 2017, and it supplied ample listening material over break. The four albums were vastly different from each other and, likewise, had varying levels of success.

The 75th Golden Globe Awards on NBC Sunday night was the first major awards ceremony to be held since the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment accusations were revealed. Before the show even began, stars appeared on the red carpet draped in all black to support the Time’s Up organization. Powered by women, Time's Up addresses the systemic inequality and injustice in the workplace, especially regarding sexual harassment, assault and inequity. Eight actresses — including Amy Poehler, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Emma Watson — were accompanied by activists in various fields, from sports to immigration to preventing sexual violence against farmworkers. This was done in hopes of shifting the public’s attention from abusers to survivors and lasting solutions. The sea of black on the red carpet cast a somber, yet striking shadow on the evening and resonated throughout the ceremony.

With the first explosive trailer for Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” having finally been released, the world is buzzing with excitement, rumors and predictions about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembling to face the long-awaited Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet. The film’s 2018 release date comes 10 years after the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first prodigal son, “Iron Man” was released. In “Iron Man,” Captain America’s shield was included in the background of one scene, and Nick Fury appears in another to discuss “the Avengers Initiative”; both were just Easter Eggs at the time, but what became of them has taken the world by storm to become the highest grossing film franchise of all time, a cultural icon for our generation and a reason to consume a lot of popcorn.

The relief comes early in the morning. After the smoke has settled and both sides have risen their flags. At such high stakes, meticulously finding the power and firearm to fight the war with transparent support becomes increasingly difficult. The offbeat sound explodes early. With an unwavering leverage on death, we carry this history like garments. At times, we wear water like it cannot drown us: wading in this water, cutting loose the familiar ties to trauma. At what point do we reclaim back our bodies before it feels criminal?

While sporting flannels and hoodies, the hip musicians of Whitney transported audiences away from the thick air of the Majestic Theatre. The band had the vibes of a gang of dudes simply jamming around a bonfire on the shore of a sunset-tinted, misty lake. The sold-out crowd swayed and smiled to the indie pop tunes, basking in the hints of outdoorsy late summer nights.

With the new “Marvel: Infinity War” trailer out this week, new seasons of superhero shows like “Agents of Shield,” “Runaways” and new episodes of “The Gifted,” I’m just trying to hide somewhere dark and deep where the Marvel Universe hasn’t pried its grubby little fingers yet. It’s not that I dislike Marvel; I just like to breathe the fresh air on occasion, so, let’s lead off with a suggestion from an entirely different angle.

If you’ve been around me in the past year, I’m sure I’ve brought up “Search Party” at some point during our conversations. It was my favorite show of last year, and arguably one of my favorite shows of all time. Season one was full of mystery and twists with a cast that seemed to be made for one another, and season two is keeping the momentum going.

2017 has been an incredible year for video games; Nintendo released the Switch with success, Sony gave us a slew of exclusive Japanese titles like “Persona 5” and Microsoft premiered the most powerful console to date with the Xbox One X. “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” (“PUBG”) took the digital distribution platform Steam by storm, and starting next month, it will do the same to Xbox Live. Whether you own a console or gaming PC, there were generation-defining experiences to be had.

Upon leaving the theater after viewing “Justice League,” it can be misleading to judge the film based on excitement for its characters or the introduction of humor into the DC universe. However, DC’s first attempt at a large-scale team-up movie fails to bounce back from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the universally panned previous installment in the franchise.

“Star Wars: Battlefront II” is one of the most interesting unintentional tragedies ever put forth in the games medium. Every second spent playing it exudes this melancholic mix of moderate enjoyment and deep hurt over all that it could have been.

The premature cold breezing through Madison seemed to subside as hip hop artist Noname graced the stage with her warm spunk at the Majestic Theatre on Monday. Body heat collected as the sold-out crowd grooved to her bouncy grooves, and the warmth of her wide, toothy smile — which never waned during her brief and energetic set — could have melted the iciest of hearts.

With a Wisconsin accent and growing beard for No-Shave-November, Charlie Berens walked up to the fifth floor of Vilas Hall after sleeping on a plane. The J-School alum and former Daily Cardinal arts writer was in town for the Michigan game and spent the afternoon chatting with current Badgers. In his time away from Madison, Berens moved around a lot, taking risks and networking as a TV-broadcaster in Dallas before transitioning into satire and comedy.
