Professor acknowledges, apologizes for wearing blackface in past

UW-Madison counseling psychology professor William Hoyt apologized to colleagues and students after disclosing that he donned blackface during a performance at the Overture Center in the early 2000s.  Hoyt sent other department faculty members an email Monday apologizing for causing discomfort when he admitted during a game of “two truths and a lie” at the department awards ceremony to participating in “blackface or really brown face.”

Tweet shows second sticker with racist messaging on campus

A UW-Madison student brought attention via Twitter to a second sticker from the white nationalist group Hundred-Handers, garnering a response from students and faculty Tuesday. UW-Madison freshman Dianna Murray tweeted a photo of the sticker which read “Mass immigration is white genocide,” along with a photo of a Daily Cardinal article reporting on the first sticker that was found.

UW-Madison plans to upgrade Bascom Hill infrastructure

UW-Madison plans to upgrade Bascom Hill’s underground infrastructure as a part of the Campus Master Plan.  With a budget of $43,000,000, UW-Madison will start a project in late April that aims to replace the steam, chilled water and electrical power infrastructure beneath Bascom Hill.  According to university officials, the project will reconstruct thermal utilities (steam, condensate and chilled water), electrical utilities (primary electric and signal communications) and civil utilities (domestic water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer) underneath Bascom Hill.

With students at the lead, Hoofer Ambassadors places equity and inclusivity at the center of the conversation about accessing the outdoors.  The newly-formed, student-led program, Hoofer Ambassadors, places equity and inclusivity at the center of the conversation about accessing the outdoors.  The program took shape over the spring semester, and is a product of efforts to bring more inclusion to Hoofers, UW-Madison’s outdoors club.

Angela Davis visits UW-Madison, inspires community, youth

Political activist and author Angela Davis visited UW-Madison students and community members Tuesday evening, inspiring hope and instilling a sense of unity despite what she calls a “hostile national political climate.”  Davis, an Alabama native, has conducted research on issues related to race, imprisonment and gender. She is also a founding member of Critical Resistance, a national organization devoted to the deconstruction of the prison industrial complex.

Discussion of campus sustainability practices kicks off UW Earth Week

In light of earth week, the WUD Society and Politics Committee hosted a discussion centered around sustainable energy and energy policy as it relates to UW-Madison Monday. Led by Jacob McInnis, Associate Director of Events for the Wisconsin Union Directorate Society & Politics Committee, the discussion focused primarily on sustainable energy and what political action needs to be taken in order to institute change.

First-ever Wisco-lympics event aims to bring students together

The Wisconsin Black Student Union and the Wisconsin Association for Black Men will host a weekend of competitive team sports in order to engage various student groups with the outdoors.  The event, called Wisco-lympics, will consist of two days of outdoor activities including basketball and volleyball tournaments. The games will take place at the Lakeshore basketball courts on April 20 and the Sellery courts on April 21.
