New student-lead program aims to increase equitable access to the outdoors

With students at the lead, Hoofer Ambassadors places equity and inclusivity at the center of the conversation about accessing the outdoors.  The newly-formed, student-led program, Hoofer Ambassadors, places equity and inclusivity at the center of the conversation about accessing the outdoors.  The program took shape over the spring semester, and is a product of efforts to bring more inclusion to Hoofers, UW-Madison’s outdoors club.

Angela Davis visits UW-Madison, inspires community, youth

Political activist and author Angela Davis visited UW-Madison students and community members Tuesday evening, inspiring hope and instilling a sense of unity despite what she calls a “hostile national political climate.”  Davis, an Alabama native, has conducted research on issues related to race, imprisonment and gender. She is also a founding member of Critical Resistance, a national organization devoted to the deconstruction of the prison industrial complex.

Discussion of campus sustainability practices kicks off UW Earth Week

In light of earth week, the WUD Society and Politics Committee hosted a discussion centered around sustainable energy and energy policy as it relates to UW-Madison Monday. Led by Jacob McInnis, Associate Director of Events for the Wisconsin Union Directorate Society & Politics Committee, the discussion focused primarily on sustainable energy and what political action needs to be taken in order to institute change.

First-ever Wisco-lympics event aims to bring students together

The Wisconsin Black Student Union and the Wisconsin Association for Black Men will host a weekend of competitive team sports in order to engage various student groups with the outdoors.  The event, called Wisco-lympics, will consist of two days of outdoor activities including basketball and volleyball tournaments. The games will take place at the Lakeshore basketball courts on April 20 and the Sellery courts on April 21.

UW Band director to give last performance after 50 years

Beloved UW-Madison Varsity Band Director Mike Leckrone faces his final curtain call this weekend at the band’s annual spring concert at the Kohl Center.  For 50 years, Leckrone has been directing the band on the Madison campus, bleeding Badger pride with every musical note. After half of a century of endless rehearsals and performances, he will conduct his final shows this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Lakeshore Nature Preserve updates master plan, seeks student input

The UW-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve is currently updating their decade-old master plan by creating a comprehensive strategic planning process to guide the use and management of the preserve. In 2006, the preserve created a master plan with the goal of protecting its natural features and providing enjoyment for the community. Now, with hopes of improving the preserve, UW-Madison students are being asked to contribute to the planning process by completing a survey about their use of the preserve.

Debut of Wisconsin LGBTQ+ Health summit introduces plans to eliminate health disparities

Through policy change, staff integration and more welcoming spaces, the UW-Madison School of Nursing aimed to create more positive relationships between medical practitioners and LGBTQ+ patients by hosting the first Wisconsin LGBTQ+ Health Summit.  The summit aimed to provide an opportunity for LGBTQ+ community members to navigate resources, educate healthcare providers on how to improve the health of LGBTQ+ individuals and create a public space for both groups to effectively communicate.

UW women undergraduates recognized for leadership roles on campus

Dozens of undergraduate women in leadership flocked to Memorial Union to be honored at the first annual Wisconsin Womxn Lead Gala for the work they have done in the community relating to women’s equality and overall success Wednesday.  The Gala took place to honor 53 nominees, who were appointed by their peers for demonstrating exceptional leadership in the Madison community.

Wisconsin Arboretum granted listing in National Historic Site Register

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum recently became a national historic site, as it is recognized as the birthplace of ecological restoration of prairie ecological communities.  In order to be listed on the register, a property must be at least 50 years old and demonstrate its significance in architecture, its association with a person of historic importance, its archaeological potential, or its history — which can include conservation.
