Writer, activist identifies unity in differences

“Identity” takes on a different meaning from person to person. Wisconsin Union Directorate welcomed renowned writer, lecturer and activist Andrew Solomon to speak on this topic and its roots as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series Wednesday. In addition to publishing several successful novels, such as National Book Award winner “The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression,” Solomon is a professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University Medical Center and president of the Poets, Essayists and Novelists American Center.

White Privilege 101 teaches students to utilize their privilege

The conversation, led by Multicultural Student Center Social Justice Educator Khaled Ismail, provided attendees with an understanding of their privileges. He urged individuals to examine how racism occurs in day-to-day life and gave ideas of how to use their privilege to fix these issues.

Student’s clothing line aims to inspire ‘resistance,’ discomfort

With help from designer Jenaé Hu, Pickett created a line of shirts called “Resistance: Gold Edition.” The new apparel feature phrases outlined in gold that say “Stay Woke or Get Killed in Your Sleep,” “Black Boy Brilliance” and “Fuck White Supremacy.”

A lecture slide that showed a black woman above the word “animals” in a UW-Madison lecture Monday sparked student outrage on social media. A student in the class tweeted a picture Tuesday of the PowerPoint slide, which appeared in a lecture of Botany 123.

Student-run consulting firm aids students in gaining real world experience

Local businesses and start-ups in the Madison area are turning toward a UW-Madison student organization for help with developing professional skills. Badger Consulting is a student consulting firm that currently has 40 members who work together in small groups to give consumer insights, as well as conduct industry and market research. Formally known as Badger Social Media, Badger Consulting was founded by UW-Madison graduate Matt Soderberg in 2012.

New UWPD Chief hopes to repair connection between police, campus community

Scholarship encourages international education, global improvement

The King-Morgridge Scholars program, which is set to begin in the fall of 2017, will award four-year scholarships to six international students from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and South Asia, according to university officials.

People of all identities from various countries marched passed the United States Capitol building holding signs that supported organizations such as Planned Parenthood and criticized newly inaugurated President Donald Trump at the Women’s March on Washington Saturday.

UW students unite with thousands in D.C. solidarity march

United States citizens and individuals from other countries, young children and elderly folks, various genders and all races were present at the Women’s March on Washington Saturday. Attendees showed support for women’s rights—which speakers said are merely human rights—and spoke out against controversial statements made by President Donald Trump.

After students walked out of classes to protest Trump's inauguration Friday, some joined a city-wide rally and march in downtown Madison.
