Madison police chief, Dane County DA trade criticisms over juvenile justice system

Two of Madison’s top law enforcement officials traded public criticisms online Tuesday, chastising each other for their treatment of juvenile offenders. The dispute began when Madison Police Chief Mike Koval released his daily blog post, in which he expressed concern about the increasing frequency of “juveniles engaged in serious, illegal behavior[s].” Koval cast doubt on whether the "failing" juvenile justice system actually held offenders accountable for their actions.


Currently, WiscAlerts only serve campus areas. A new program aims to make students safer by covering more ground.

Madison schools, police receive federal grant for school safety

The Madison Metropolitan School District and the Madison Police Department received a $250,000 grant from the federal government to train staff on restorative crisis intervention. The grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, was created by the STOP School Violence Act of 2018, designed to help school officials defuse potentially violent situations.


A recent survey administered to Dane County education professionals showed they are largely in support of more regulations against e-cigarette use.

Rise in e-cigarette popularity among teens causes school staff to worry

The rise in popularity of e-cigarettes have Dane County education professionals worried, the City of Madison announced Tuesday. The city shared results of a survey focused on e-cigarettes, which was sent in May to staff from Dane County schools, including nurses, social workers and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse program coordinators, as well as middle and high school principals.


Madison Mayor Paul Soglin denounced the Town of Madison police department’s decision to hire former DeForest police chief Daniel Furseth, who resigned in August after racist comments came to light.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin expressed his disappointment in the Town of Madison police department’s decision to hire former DeForest Police Chief Daniel Furseth, who resigned in August after making racist comments in a YouTube video. The video, posted to YouTube in December 2015 by a former DeForest police intern, features Furseth speaking in a stereotypically black voice while filming a group of well-dressed black men walking into a Steak and Shake restaurant.

City officials warn of flooding as forecasts show rain

Madison city officials are warning residents to keep sandbags in place as rain forecasts over the next several days raise concerns for a new round of flash flooding. City officials report both Lakes Monona and Mendota rose five inches following rainstorms Sunday and Monday, but are still down six and nine inches respectively from their highs during the August storms.

Man arrested after exposing himself to a family

The 31-year-old woman spotted the man on 600 block of East Washington Avenue around 6:30 p.m. The police identified the suspect as 58-year-old Waldemar Santiago-Rivera. They arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct while armed, felon in possession of a knife, as well as lewd, lascivious behavior and exposure.
