New report shows disproportionate tobacco and nicotine use

Several demographic groups disproportionality use tobacco, according to a recently released report from Public Health Madison-Dane County. “While the reported overall decreases in tobacco use seem like very good news, a deeper look reveals that smoking and tobacco use rates among several groups remain much higher,” Tobacco Free Columbia Dane County Coalition Coordinator Ryan Sheahan said in a Monday press release.

Man arrested for trying to break into State Street apartment

Madison Police Department officers arrested Austin Byrd, 22, for alleged attempted burglary, disorderly conduct and two counts of criminal damage to property after he tried breaking into a State Street apartment Saturday night. The victim, a 22-year-old female, was studying in her apartment when she heard a “pounding” on the door, according to an MPD incident report. “She heard the sound of breaking glass, not just once, but twice,” MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain wrote in the report.

Three UW-Madison students have accused Alec R. Cook of sexual assault. Madison Police Department is recommending he receive additional charges following the third report.

Third victim comes forward in Cook case

A third victim has come forward to report Alec R. Cook, a UW-Madison senior, of sexual assault. The 20-year-old victim said Cook assaulted her in a downtown apartment in 2015 and MPD detectives will recommend that Cook face additional charges of second-degree sexual assault and false imprisonment, according to a Madison Police Department incident report. The new report came shortly after a second victim came forward to report the suspect of sexually assaulting her last February.

Cook tentatively charged with second sexual assault

Alec Cook, 20, who was arrested for alleged sexual assault earlier this week, turned himself into Madison Police officers Thursday night and has been tentatively charged with the sexual assault of a second victim. The second victim, a 20-year-old female, came forward after the initial arrest and told MPD investigators Cook also sexually assaulted her in a downtown apartment last February, according to an updated MPD incident report. "I saw the news story and was empowered by another girl being able to tell what happened to her, that I thought I could now finally tell,” she told a detective, according to the report. The second arrest of Cook's has two counts of second degree sexual assault and one account of third degree sexual assault. Cook’s former fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, announced Thursday night they “separated” from him.

Unoccupied boat leads to search, no rescue

The Lake Rescue Team, affiliated with Madison Fire Department, was called out to Lake Monona to investigate an eerie situation during the midmorning hours Wednesday. According to a MFD incident report, people fishing and enjoying the unusually warm weather were suspicious when they saw an unattended boat a distance from the shoreline with the motor running for more than 10 minutes. The Lake Rescue Team arrived at the Olin Park boat launch at approximately 9:34 a.m., and proceeded into the water to the neglected boat. “Medic 5 was in the area at the time and also responded to the scene,” Public Information Officer Cynthia Schuster said. “They met an off-duty Madison firefighter who just happened to [have] return[ed] from fishing.” After arriving at the unattended vessel, two other boats cruised over.

UW-Madison student files complaint alleging discriminatory rental practices

UW-Madison student Nicole Niebler, president of the student organization Atheists, Humanists & Agnostics, has filed an Equal Opportunities Commission against the owners and managers of the apartment Lumen House, which is a former Catholic school. The complaint alleges Lumen House is operating discriminatory rental practices against renters who are not practicing Catholics.

MFD paramedic saves overdosing man after dog bites her

A West Side man’s dog sat on his chest following a heroin overdose Tuesday. The dog growled at Madison Fire Department paramedics when they arrived and even bit one before they could help the man. MFD officials responded to a report of an unconscious man in the basement of a University Hills Farms-area neighborhood around 2 p.m., Tuesday.

Morton Forest is located in Mazomanie, in the western part of Dane County and is around a 40-minute drive from the UW-Madison campus, according to Google Maps.

New hiking area opens 40 minutes from campus

Dane County opened Morton Forest, a new county park in Mazomanie, Monday . The approximately 114-acre forest was created when Madison resident Stephen Morton donated his family’s estate to the county earlier this year, according to a Monday press release.

John Nolen Drive car crash sends seven to local hospital

A sedan carrying four and going 30 to 35 mph struck a MINI Cooper carrying three Sunday on the corner of John Nolen Drive and North Shore Drive, sending all seven occupants of the vehicles to the hospital. The driver of the sedan said he ran into the MINI Cooper, which was stopped at a red light, according to a Madison Fire Department incident report. “There were three passengers in his vehicle, including a 27-year-old female and two young children

Madison startups showcase their ideas in Silicon Valley

Five emerging Madison startups met with prominent venture capital firms in Silicon Valley this week in an exclusive delegation led by The Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce. “Our economic momentum is real, and it is important that we continue to tell the Greater Madison’s story as a world-class place to build and invest,” said Chamber President Zach Brandon in a release.

Women who are between the ages 45 and 64, with certain incomes, are eligible for the tests, and the nearest clinic to campus is the UW Health location.

Free breast cancer screenings in Madison

Free breast exams, mammograms and other diagnostic health tests will be available for free to certain women at 22 clinics in Dane County. “Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women and is the second most common cause of death from cancer,” Public Health Madison-Dane County Public Information Officer Jeff Golden said in a press release.
