County Board votes to raise minimum wage

The Dane County Board of Supervisors voted to amend its minimum wage ordinance Tuesday night, increasing pay for workers of the county and entities with which the county contracts to $12.50 by January of next year. The updated ordinance changes the definition of a “living wage” in service contracts and sets an hourly wage for those service contracts at $12.50 effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Madison to address 'Digital Divide'

The city of Madison announced Tuesday that it will be addressing the barrier some citizens face to accessing affordable Internet through a new program called Connecting Madison. Common Council established the Digital Technology Committee in 2013 with the mission of “making studies and recommendations relative to facilitating the provision of internet access to all citizens with special attention to low income families, realizing additional benefits from and [expanded] utilization of the Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network...” Connecting Madison is what came of that committee to ensure Internet access for low-income families.

Common Council delays Soglin panhandling amendment

The city of Madison Common Council unanimously voted to delay discussion of a motion intended to curb roadside panhandling put forth by Mayor Paul Soglin Tuesday. Madison suspended enforcement of its General Ordinances regarding panhandling in January after the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin sent a letter to city attorney Michael May, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Man shot near Memorial Union

A man was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen near Memorial Union early Sunday morning. The man, whom Madison Police are not identifying at this time, was at an outdoor party on the 600 block of Mendota Court.

Poor weather keeps Mifflin turnout relatively low

No serious issues were reported throughout Saturday during the wet and muddy 2016 Mifflin Street Block Party, according to the Madison Police Department Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain. DeSpain estimated about 3,500 people attended the event at any one point Saturday.


The Capitol Square construction will continue through August.

Capitol Square construction to continue

This Monday S&L Underground will continue the Capitol Square construction project by starting work on North Pinckney Street between East Washington Avenue and North Hamilton Street; and on East Mifflin Street between North Hamilton Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi highlights Denim Day

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Rape Crisis Center Executive Director Erin Thornley Parisi held a press conference Wednesday in the City County Building to highlight Denim Day, which is meant to bring awareness to Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day first occurred in April 1999, according to the Denim Day website. The movement started after an 18-year-old Italian woman accused her driver’s education instructor of driving her to a remote road, forcing her out of the car and raping her. The case made it to the Italian Supreme Court, which ruled the sex must have been consensual because her jeans were so tight she must have helped take them off.


The Madison Police Department is preparing to police the annual Mifflin Street Block Party this Saturday.

City officials prepare for Mifflin Street Block Party

Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval released a statement Monday detailing policing strategies for this year’s Mifflin Street Block Party and held a press conference Tuesday to address the event. Mifflin, which MPD considers a “non-event” because the city does not sanction it, has a long and checkered past.

MPD officer saves suicidal man

A Madison Police Officer was able to save the life of a suicidal man Friday afternoon, according to an incident report. The 30-year-old man was about to leap from the State Street Capitol Parking Garage at 214 North Carroll St.
