State Street’s new look: More retail could be coming

The preliminary recommendations for the city’s retail impact study include suggestions for changing the perception of parking availability, addressing homelessness downtown and possibly adjusting regulations.  Tangible Consulting Services and Perkins+Will prepared an interim report of recommended policies and strategies for improving retail downtown.

Police look for Gorham battery spree suspects

Madison police officers are looking for two to three suspects related to a series of battery incidents that occurred early in the Sunday morning. The first incident took place around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, in an apartment building on the 200 block of West Gorham Street.

Conman bluffs 72-year-old

A 72-year-old Madison man is dumbfounded after officials say he received a phony telephone call from someone reporting to be his grandson at the Madison Police Department. The grandfather told police the caller’s “parents” would “flip out” if he contacted them.

Committee to discuss retail impact study Thursday

Over the past couple months, the Downtown Coordinating Committee along with Tangible Consulting Services, a Minneapolis company specializing in “services to advance public goals and high-quality development,” has been studying ways to improve retail in downtown Madison.


MPD Chief Mike Koval spoke before the Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee on issues of policing policy.

Police Chief and Urban League of Greater Madison CEO talk community relations

Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval and Urban League of Greater Madison President and CEO Dr. Ruben Anthony discussed police-community relations Thursday night before the Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee. Both communities answered five pre-determined questions from the committee on improving policing policy in Madison and how they thought it could be improved.

Dane County initiative strives for alternatives to jail

The Diversion Work Group, a new component of the 2016 Dane County Budget, presented its report, focusing on reducing the number of individuals in jail and promoting a more efficient criminal justice system, to the Dane County Public Protection and Judiciary Committee Tuesday. The organization is made up of 11 appointed members from the community as well as county staff who were picked for their significant justice system experience and expertise.


Twenty-three recruits were sworn into the Madison Police Department Monday. MPD Chief Mike Koval has said the department will need more officers as the city’s population approaches 250,000.

MPD swears in 23 new recruits

The Madison Police Department swore in 23 new recruits at the Police Training Center on Femrite Drive Monday, after they completed the department’s Pre-Service Academy. After spending over 800 hours in “academy” training, the recruits will spend the next three months working with a veteran officer on patrol.

MPD arrests suspect in Saturday sexual assault

The Madison Police Department arrested Zachary Vannatta, 22, for alleged second-degree sexual assault after an incident at a house party Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred on the 1500 block of Jefferson Street, near 7-Eleven on Regent Street, according to an MPD incident report.


Supervisor First Vice-Chair Jeff Pertl, who was the chief sponsor of the bill, was the first supervisor to speak in support of the bill during Thursday’s meeting.

County Board votes to raise minimum wage

The Dane County Board of Supervisors voted to amend its minimum wage ordinance Tuesday night, increasing pay for workers of the county and entities with which the county contracts to $12.50 by January of next year. The updated ordinance changes the definition of a “living wage” in service contracts and sets an hourly wage for those service contracts at $12.50 effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Madison to address 'Digital Divide'

The city of Madison announced Tuesday that it will be addressing the barrier some citizens face to accessing affordable Internet through a new program called Connecting Madison. Common Council established the Digital Technology Committee in 2013 with the mission of “making studies and recommendations relative to facilitating the provision of internet access to all citizens with special attention to low income families, realizing additional benefits from and [expanded] utilization of the Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network...” Connecting Madison is what came of that committee to ensure Internet access for low-income families.
