Wisconsin’s opening-night shutout win over then No. 10 Boston College caught the attention of the college hockey community and signalled that the Badgers had the talent to exceed expectations in 2018-’19. But given the program’s recent history, what they did the next night seemed even more significant.

Junior Jack Berry stopped just 11 of the 15 shots he faced in Friday night's 5-0 loss, costing the Badgers a chance in a game where they outshot North Dakota.

Goaltending, penalties prove costly as Wisconsin swept by North Dakota

The No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers (0-0-0 Big Ten, 4-4-0 overall) dropped both games of their weekend set to the No. 14 North Dakota Fighting Hawks (0-0-0 NCHC, 4-2-1 overall). Friday’s contest ended in a 5-0 blowout in favor of the Fighting Hawks, and Saturday night’s contest ended just seconds into overtime as Jacob Bernard-Docker found the back of the net for North Dakota, giving it a 3-2 win.

Sophomore Brette Pettet was one of three underclassmen to score for Wisconsin with multiple top seniors unavailable because of international competition.

Underclassman scoring leads Wisconsin to weekend sweep of Minnesota State

In a weekend series at the Verizon Center in Mankato, the Wisconsin Badgers (5-1-0- WCHA, 11-1-0 overall) beat Minnesota State (2-5-1, 4-5-1) 2-1 on Friday night and followed it up with a 2-0 shutout on Saturday.

Forward Abby Roque notched the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the game en route to UW's 3-0 win.

Wisconsin heads on the road without top talent to take on Minnesota State

In their second away series of the season, the Badgers (9-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 WCHA) take on the Minnesota State Mavericks (4-3-1 overall, 2-3-1-1 WCHA) this weekend in Mankato.

Kristen Campbell made a season-high 30 saves, including 18 in the third period, to hold off the Gophers on Sunday.

A goaltender’s jersey can tell you the kind of game they had; a clean one is a sign that they weren’t tested much, while a netminder who stands on their head can come away covered with signatures of shots stopped. After Sunday’s matchup with Minnesota, Kristin Campbell’s jersey was covered in black puck-marks, including a large one at the tip of the red W.

Wisconsin drops border battle opener 1-0 in hard-fought contest

Just when it looked like Wisconsin’s women’s hockey team might have a number on its border-battle rival — with wins in six of the team’s last seven meetings — Minnesota flipped the script and got revenge for last year’s NCAA tournament defeat.

Seamus Malone tallied the opening goal against Michigan Tech, but it wasn't enough as the Badgers allowed too many penalties, and goals, to give themselves a chance at the win.

Special teams struggles doom Wisconsin in 6-2 loss to Michigan Tech

Five-on-five, Wisconsin played well enough. It battled for loose pucks, tracked back to shut down odd-man rushes and got traffic in front of the net to disrupt the opposing goaltender’s eyes and rhythm. The Badgers allowed a goal, but they scored one, too. It wasn’t a stellar performance, but it was good enough to have a chance at a win.

Freshman star Sophie Shirley leads a confident Badger squad into Minnesota clash

Earlier this week, freshman forward Sophie Shirley was named the National Third Star and the WCHA Rookie of the Week after scoring three goals in two games against Princeton last weekend. Shirley scored both game winners in the series to lead Wisconsin to a sweep and, with Clarkson’s loss, the No. 1 ranking in the country.

Sophomore forward Sean Dhooghe has scored five goals this year to lead a scoring explosion by Wisconsin’s underclassmen.

By numbers alone, Wisconsin’s men’s hockey team was always going to be reliant on its underclassmen this year.

Wisconsin split its opening road weekend of 2018-19 and maintained its offensive output with nine goals in the two games.

As a freshman, it took Sean Dhooghe 22 games and three months to score four goals for the UW men's hockey team. On the first road trip of his sophomore year, it took him just five and a half periods.

Senior forward Annie Pankowski moved from right wing to center — after losing Emily Clark to an injury — and responded with three points in two games last weekend.

With more than 15 years of experience in the head job — and fewer than 40 women’s Division 1 teams — Johnson has the luxury of knowing most of the programs he faces inside and out. But that advantage won’t be present this weekend, as Wisconsin’s No. 2-ranked women’s hockey team (2-0-0 WCHA, 6-0-0 overall) welcomes the Princeton Tigers (0-0-0 ECAC, 0-0-0 overall) to Madison.

Sophomore defender Natalie Buchbinder opened the scoring for the Badgers with a rocket from the slot — her first goal of the year and just the second of her career.

Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson’s career has included plenty of big wins. On Sunday he captured another win that — although not the most famous or most memorable — represents more than any other.

Junior goaltender Jack Berry produced one of his best performances of the season in his first action in over a month, but it wasn't enough for the Badgers to come out with a win against Denver.

Nearly two years ago to the day, head coach Tony Granato made his home coaching debut against a top-10 Boston College team and left with a statement win. The same script played out again Friday night as an unranked Badger squad (0-0-0 Big Ten, 1-0-0 overall) welcomed the No. 10 Eagles (0-0-0 Hockey East, 0-1-0 overall) to the Kohl Center and captured a 3-0 upset.

Defenseman Peter Tischke was almost cut when Granato took over, but since then he's come to embody all the characteristics that 'Badger hockey' represents.

In the fall of 2010 a pair of Wisconsin skaters — Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan — returned to Madison after a year spent chasing Olympic glory and showed the college hockey world just how much they had learned in Vancouver. Eight years later, a new Wisconsin duo are entering their final seasons looking to follow in the same footsteps and lead the Badgers to the national championship that has eluded them.

The Wisconsin players are tasked with picking the pregame soundtrack that plays in the Kohl Center prior to puck drop. The players really enjoy the opportunity to hear the songs they pick on the ice during gamedays.
