Nursing students to assist with meningococcal vaccinations

After two UW-Madison students contracted meningococcal disease, more than 80 nursing students will volunteer to administer vaccinations beginning Thursday at the SERF. According to Dr. Pam McGranahan, an assistant clinical professor at the UW-Madison School of Nursing, first-year students will be conducting screenings and managing crowd control while second-year students will be the immunizers.

Panelists explore role of religion in 2016 election

The intersection of religion and politics is a historic and controversial tradition in American discourse, and one given contemporary insight by a diverse panel of members of the faith community brought together by The Capital Times Thursday night. “I was kind of hoping to think of a joke about everyone on this panel walking into a bar,” joked moderator and Cap Times reporter Jessie Opoien. Faith has often been a galvanizing factor in American politics, from the scripture-charged battle against slavery, to the natural law-based defense of statewide same-sex marriage bans.

Report reveals growing student debt in Wisconsin

According to a report issued Monday by the Institute for College Access & Success, national debt levels are climbing, with seven in 10 Wisconsin graduates amassing debt. After increasing by 4 percent nationally and 2 percent statewide this year, the accumulated average debt of Wisconsin college graduates now stands at $29,460.

UW-Madison student files complaint alleging discriminatory rental practices

UW-Madison student Nicole Niebler, president of the student organization Atheists, Humanists & Agnostics, has filed an Equal Opportunities Commission against the owners and managers of the apartment Lumen House, which is a former Catholic school. The complaint alleges Lumen House is operating discriminatory rental practices against renters who are not practicing Catholics.

Clinton maintains lead in new Monmouth poll

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is holding on to a lead over Republican Donald Trump in Wisconsin, according to a Monmouth University poll of the state released Wednesday. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed say they will back Clinton, with 40 percent supporting Trump.

MFD paramedic saves overdosing man after dog bites her

A West Side man’s dog sat on his chest following a heroin overdose Tuesday. The dog growled at Madison Fire Department paramedics when they arrived and even bit one before they could help the man. MFD officials responded to a report of an unconscious man in the basement of a University Hills Farms-area neighborhood around 2 p.m., Tuesday.

Wisconsin Black Student Union challenges student athletes’ role in campus activism

With NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest continuing to appear in headlines, UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Black Student Union hosted an open discussion on the role of student athletes in campus social justice movements. “Talk to Me Tuesdays” is a new initiative lead by the WBSU to stimulate an open discussion of racial issues and experiences related to race.

SSFC Spotlight: BadgerSpill gets go-ahead for yearly budget request

Students looking to relieve stress over a roommate, midterms, relationships or any other anxiety that comes with college life can find a quick and thorough way to do so with BadgerSpill. The program began at UW-Madison in 2009 and has since spread to more than 200 campuses across the United States, according to BadgerSpill President Lauren Hammer.
