UW-Madison sophomore Skylar Witte won the title of Miss Wisconsin USA 2017 earlier this month and plans to visit middle schools and inspire students during her reign.

UW-Madison sophomore crowned Miss Wisconsin

UW-Madison sophomore Skylar Witte was crowned Miss Wisconsin USA 2017 earlier this month after competing against 41 other women for the title. Witte balances her job as Miss Wisconsin along with her academics?she is double majoring in political science and communication arts with plans to go to law school?as well as a full-time modeling career and writing for her blog.  Since she won Miss Wisconsin 10 days ago, Witte has travelled to various Wisconsin cities, including her hometown, Altoona.

Police look for Gorham battery spree suspects

Madison police officers are looking for two to three suspects related to a series of battery incidents that occurred early in the Sunday morning. The first incident took place around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, in an apartment building on the 200 block of West Gorham Street.

Live Free creates recovery space safe from drinking culture

Madison’s reputation as a party campus filled with hard-drinking students has long served as a draw for incoming freshmen, and such was the case for now-senior Carter Kofman. However, following UW-Madison’s ranking as the top party school in the nation by the Princeton Review, discrepancies appeared between responses from university officials and many students on campus. The university quickly issued a statement criticizing the “high-risk alcohol” use on campus by calling it “a pressing public health concern,” while many students celebrated the school’s crowning rank on social media.

A 72-year-old Madison man is dumbfounded after officials say he received a phony telephone call from someone reporting to be his grandson at the Madison Police Department. The grandfather told police the caller’s “parents” would “flip out” if he contacted them.

Dear World invites student to share their stories

Dear World, a national portrait project, brought their group to UW-Madison Tuesday to ask all members of campus one question: “If you had one story to share with the world, what would you say?” Students, faculty and staff were invited to Gordon Commons to write these messages somewhere on their bodies and have their photo taken by executive producer Jonah Evans.

SSFC Spotlight: Committee approves Muslim Student Association’s eligibility

The Associated Students of Madison Student Services Finance Committee unanimously approved the 2016-’17 eligibility application for GSSF funding of the Muslim Student Association at its meeting Monday. The MSA attempts to “provide a strong sense of community and family for MSA members on campus,” according to MSA President Najeeha Khan. While MSA is a religious student organization based on Islamic principles, not all of their members are religious.

Committee to discuss retail impact study Thursday

Over the past couple months, the Downtown Coordinating Committee along with Tangible Consulting Services, a Minneapolis company specializing in “services to advance public goals and high-quality development,” has been studying ways to improve retail in downtown Madison.
