Merit Scholarship would create 'largest scholarship in state history' for students who attend UW

To avoid losing Wisconsin’s top students to other top universities, state lawmakers and agency officials presented a bill Tuesday establishing “the largest scholarship in state history” for UW schools. The scholarship, referred to as the Wisconsin Merit Scholarship, would grant $5,000 per student based off metrics such as test scores and GPA.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., who received an undergraduate degree in journalism from UW-Madison, took a trip to Vilas Hall to speak with Cardinal staff about national and local issues affecting Wisconsin.

Shoplifter pulls knife on State Street smoke shop employee, police say

Madison police are searching for a man who reportedly pulled a knife on an employee at a State Street hookah shop Wednesday night when he was caught shoplifting. The 20-year-old female employee was not hurt. Police responded to the incident at Azara Hookah, located on the 400 block of State Street, around 9:02 p.m., Madison Police Department Sgt.

Assembly Committee considers bills to combat statewide homelessness

With over 5,000 residents throughout Wisconsin having an unstable living arrangement every night, a committee in the Legislature considered a series of bills that address homelessness in a hearing Tuesday. The Assembly Committee on Public Benefit Reform discussed a package of Republican bills introduced last week that were initially criticized by Democrats as being a “cosmetic solution” that would not provide any real improvements for families currently living on the streets.

Trump signs executive order restricting visa program while in Kenosha

President Donald Trump signed an executive order while visiting Wisconsin Tuesday to aid American workers by limiting the number of highly skilled foreign workers that technology companies can hire. Trump signed the directive at Snap-on Inc., a large tool manufacturer in Kenosha, Wis., where he gave a speech highlighting the importance of manufacturing.

Of the 1,470 professors to sign the bipartisan letter, six are from UW-Madison, and an additional 10 are from other Wisconsin schools. The letter addressed concerns over the Trump administration’s isolationist immigration policy and outlined positive gains derived from immigration.

Pocan joins bipartisan call for Trump’s administration to consult Congress about Yemen

Janesville man who threatened schools, churches still on the run

A burglary of a gun store Tuesday has escalated into a nation-wide search for Joseph Jakubowsky, a Janesville-area man who has reportedly threatened to carry out an attack on an undisclosed location.

Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill Monday that makes it easier for patients to acquire CBD oil, which is made from marijuana and is used to treat children who suffer from seizures.
