Wisconsin is spending more on education, says report

Wisconsin state spending on education has increased slightly, according to a report from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, which showed an approximately 1 percent increase in fiscal support for total school costs. State's coverage of effective costs rests at 62.7 percent, up from 62.3 percent in 2014 and 62 percent in 2013. The proportion of fiscal support provided varies widely, and is calculated from relevant variables including district property values, poverty levels and specific targeted aid.


A legislative committee voted to extend an emergency voter ID rule, despite debate over whether voters have been told conflicting information regarding the law.

Lawmakers question voter ID implementation in hearing

A state committee voted for a 60-day extension of the state’s voter ID law Tuesday. The vote comes admist reports that Division of Motor Vehicles staff has been offering inaccurate information for people about how to obtain their IDs required for voting. Wisconsin enacted a statute requiring voters to present one of several acceptable photographic identifications in 2011.

Walker announces UW Credit Union eligibility expansion to fight student loan debt

Amid record levels of student debt in Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker announced Tuesday alterations to UW Credit Union’s membership eligibility, with the intention of providing a greater level of access to loan refinancing opportunities for students of the state. Walker announced the changes at a press conference in Madison and was joined by officials of both the credit union and the Department of Financial Institutions, the relevant state regulatory agency, when announcing the alterations. Under the previous criteria, UW Credit Union membership was offered exclusively to students and alumni of the UW System.


A federal judge upheld Wisconsin’s right-to-work law Monday, which has previously been heavily protested at the state Capitol.

Federal judge denies union’s appeal to block right-to-work law

A federal judge announced Monday his decision to deny a union plea to repeal “right-to-work” law, after opponents claimed it violated the Fifth Amendment. Three unions challenging the bill allege it is unconstitutional on the grounds that it results in an unlawful seizure of private property without fair compensation.
