It was hard to envision the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers (11-4 overall, 7-0 Big 10) being pushed to five sets by the No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini (9-7 overall, 4-3 Big 10) going into the night. When the Illini won sets two and three, however, Wisconsin’s spotless conference record was very much in doubt.
In an impressive showing, the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (10-4, 6-0) dominated the No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-3, 5-1) in the Field House, winning by a score of three sets to none.
History was made at the Wisconsin Field House on Wednesday night, as the No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers Volleyball (7-4 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) team recorded their 1,000th program win. What a win it was, as Wisconsin defeated No. 5 Penn State (9-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) in dramatic fashion, coming from behind after dropping the first set to the Nittany Lions.
The Wisconsin Badgers (6-4 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) continued their strong start to conference play Sunday, as they defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (11-4 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) in four sets, highlighted by strong performances from Molly Haggerty and Grace Loberg.
If you just looked at the box score, you might have thought that the No.13 Wisconsin Badgers (5-4 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) cruised past the No.15 Purdue Boilermakers (8-2 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) without much difficulty. The Badgers swept the Boilermakers on three sets, and all advanced stats were slanted heavily in the Badgers favor.
The Field House was packed for No. 9 Wisconsin’s (4-3) red-out game against No. 10 Washington (8-1), but the crowd went home disappointed after the Huskies upset the Badgers three sets to one.
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield was unsure how his team would deal with an athletic Pepperdine team Friday night. Much to his delight, the Badgers (15-5 Big Ten, 24-6 overall) were ready for the Waves'attack, beating Pepperdine (14-4 WCC, 22-9) 25-16, 25-12, 15-25, 25-13 to advance to the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
No. 6 Wisconsin’s athleticism was simply too much to handle for the Green Bay Phoenix Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
