Ah, summer. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the lake is… being a lake. For three months at least, the world is bright and beautiful. What’s a better way to spend them than by shutting yourself into a dark room with a collection of strangers to be distracted by light and sound for a couple hours?
OK, so guys, more “Arrested Development” is on the way. It’s going to be here soon. It’s a big deal.
Movies are ridiculous in the absolute best way—most of the time.
OK so I know this is a week late, but Roger Ebert died. Oh man. I mean, just in terms of pure ability to get inside movies, to understand how and why they connected with us on our most basic level and in terms of being able to take us from laughter to insight as quickly as the best of the movies he loved… he can’t really ever be replaced. We’d be insane to try.
Movies are all about perception. And not in an “our perception of a subjective reality created by the editing of time and space is what defines out movie going experiences” sort of way.
Oh man. SXSW. Okay, here we go, get ready, there’s kind of a lot.
After having a disturbing number of conversations in which people informed me that their favorite director is Christopher Nolan, it occurred to me that there’s a long, long list of directors that most people aren’t, but everyone should be, familiar with.
Nicolas Cage. Yes, that Nicolas Cage. We all know him, or of him, though to some he’s more of a living meme than an actual person or actor.
As my girlfriend has so kindly reminded me, it’s almost Valentine’s Day. Or is. Or was. It’s around here somewhere is the point.
So last week I started into my (very one-sided) discussion of this year’s Oscar field, and I spent most of that time looking at Tom Hooper’s adaptation of “Les Misérables” and little of that time talking about Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”
