UW-Madison students organize events to celebrate Native American heritage month

UW-Madison’s Native November Planning Leadership, composed of organizations like American Indian Science and Engineering Society and the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center, has collaborated to organize a series of events to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. This celebration is a part of Nation Native American Heritage Month, celebrated in November to pay tribute to the ancestry and traditions of Native Americans.

UW-Madison students, faculty support tobacco-free campus

Many UW-Madison students, faculty and staff are in support of a tobacco-free campus, according to a recent survey. A Tobacco-Free Columbia-Dane County Coalition survey distributed in October 2017, in partnership with Public Health Madison and Dane County and the UW-Madison SPARK organization, found that 81 percent of student respondents support the campus going tobacco-free.

UW-Madison publishes protest guidelines to distinguish between activism and disruption

In an effort to promote a safe and productive environment for debate, UW-Madison officials are setting protest guidelines for students. Interim Dean of Students Argyle Wade said he hopes to continue UW-Madison’s legacy of engaged debate on important topics, but stressed the importance of protesting in a peaceful manner. “We need to make sure that when students protest, they don’t impede the free speech of others, even when the views being expressed may be unpopular,” Wade said in a university press release. The guidelines were created to help individuals and groups on campus plan for events, including guest speakers, protests, counter-protests and demonstrations.
