Record Routine: Laura Marling seemlessly melds the old with the new in new album

The queen of the British folk-rock scene has returned from her two-year retreat. Laura Marling’s latest release, Short Movie, stays true to her folk roots but this time with some added electric elements. Since Marling’s first release at the age of 16, her growth as an artist has been incredibly evident. While Short Movie is not quite the masterpiece that 2013’s Once I Was an Eagle was (it’s hard to beat a good old-fashioned breakup album), it continues to function as a window into Marling’s soul.

Record Routine: Take a journey on 'Director' LP

After six years with Israeli garage-rock band Monotonix and a three-year recording hiatus, guitarist Yonatan Gat teamed up with percussionist Gal Lazer and bassist Sergio Sayeg to create an entirely new sound. After their first album Iberian Passage—released in May 2014—comes the LP Director. Director is a musical trip around the world, with song titles describing a journey (“East to West” and “North to South”) and evoking images of specific destinations (“Gibraltar”, “Casino Cafe”, and “L’Atlantis”). Yonatan Gat and company combine a conglomeration of Middle-Eastern folk melodies, psychedelic guitar, and drum beats with punk rock intensity.

Record Routine: French-Cuban Ibeyi show maturity on debut album

Nineteen-year-old twins Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Diaz’s first attempt to follow in their father’s footsteps certainly doesn’t fit any cookie-cutter mold. The French-Cuban duo’s debut album Ibeyi blends the songs of the Yoruba culture of their late father, with modern hip-hop and electronic influences.
