Because so much about Cuba, its people and its politics remains unknown to many Americans, there exists potential for a great political and conspiracy thriller. Roland Merullo saw this potential and ran with it in his latest novel, ""Fidel's Last Days.""
A high-powered career woman falls in love with a sports writer in ""When in Rome."" Sound familiar? Maybe because the storyline steals plot details from the Hollywood classic ""Roman Holiday."" Unlike the original version, though, ""When in Rome"" is just plain bland.
A little more than a year after its Broadway run came to a close, the revolutionary rock opera ""Rent"" is being performed at Madison's Overture Center. The cast features three of its original members from its first appearance off-Broadway: Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal and soloist Gwen Stewart.
Amelia Earhart was a risk taker. She flew solo over both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and died trying to fly around the world. Regrettably, ""Amelia,"" the new film about Earhart's life, is not able to take off beyond the basic biopic structure.
""Bright Star"" satisfies a hunger we may not have known we had: a hunger for an elegantly done, emotional love story. The passion on screen is burning and heatwarming and continues after you leave the theater.
Rated PG, ""Fame"" is almost laughably bland and watered-down in its desire to appeal to the widest possible audience. It won't succeed in this goal, but it has enough pizzazz and glitz to captivate undemanding tweens.
Instead of tackling the interesting philosophical and moral dilemmas that arise when a robot lives your life, the creators of ""Surrogates"" diluted the story to yet another Bruce Willis action movie with car chases and brutal fight scenes with near-indestructible robots.
Documenting the rise of Chess Records in the blues era, \Cadillac Records"" finds strength in the music that makes this story noteworthy.'
\Australia"" provides viewers with plenty of on-screen chemistry and appealing scenery, but the formulaic plot leaves something to be desired.'
