Just like that, it’s done. All the early mornings, late nights, road trips and long practices reduced to a teary-eyed and gloomy locker room with embraces available from all.
Last Sunday marked probably the fourth-most important Sunday of the year: Selection Sunday. On this day, thousands of collegiate basketball players discover their temporary fate, some favorable and some, not so much.
Think about the last time you waited a substantial period of time for something you truly cared about.
Eleven months of waiting. Torture. Distress. Agony. But we did it, folks. We made it. March is here. Think of how you feel when your favorite time of the year comes around.
Every college athlete hears the same thing: “You must be so busy with sports and school, I don’t know how you do it!” I normally smile, shake my head, mutter something about my schedule being hectic and move on with my life.
If you’re reading this column, I assume that you follow the basketball team at least casually. So unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past four weeks, you know that we haven’t lost a game for four weeks (knock on wood). In the basketball world, we call this a winning streak. Most recently, we defeated Maryland, a Big Ten goliath which hasn’t lost on its home court since its inception in the conference two years ago.
I know I originally wrote that I was going to devote my column this week to Aaron Moesch. As interesting and entertaining as that would have been, it will have to wait for another time.
